Track star Marion Jones pleaded guilty for steroid use during the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2001 World Olympics. As a result, all her medals during that period will be forfeited and her winnings are to be returned amounting to $700,000. The runners up in all events participated by Jones would be upgraded to their proper positions.
She deserves this for tainting the reputation of the Olympics. What happened to clean and honest games? Why did you even bother becoming an athlete if you will use performance enhancing drugs? I hope this would serve as a lesson to all athletes.

O’Neal’s two blocked shots made him the third player in NBA history to have 26,000 points, 11,500 rebounds and 2,500 blocks. The others are Kareem-Abdul Jabaar and Hakeem Olajuwon. The intense victory stemmed Phoenix’s slide in the standings, pulling them a game ahead of Dallas for the No. 6 spot in the West. Former Sun Kurt Thomas made an 18-footer to put the Spurs ahead 85-80 with 5:12 to play. A frustrated Suns coach Mike D’Antoni drew a technical moments later, but Ginobili missed the free throw in a sign of things too come. Nash’s 3-pointer cut it to 85-83 with 3:40 to play. A 24-second clock violation by San Antonio led to Stoudemire’s driving shot over Duncan that tied it at 85 with 2:58 left.

The fight between British boxing superstar Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton and Filipino ring icon Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao hasn’t even been settled yet, but already another megabuck fight seems to be in the works for Pacquiao and undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. Nothing is final yet, of course, but long has Pacquiao hinted that he would like to fight the smart mouth Mayweather, especially since he plans to retire after about two or three more profitable fights. Bob Arum of Top Rank though, Pacquiao’s promoter, has even been casually name-dropping Mayweather in some interviews, leading to speculation that there might indeed be a Pacman vs. Pretty Boy fight somewhere in the future. This is especially since Mayweather Jr. hinted that he would again leave his retirement (his megabuck fights against Oscar dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton were also “from retirement”). More details here.

The two fighters have confirmed their schedule for their title bout where they are set to fit fist against fists in the boxing ring to see who’s better. Manny Pacquiao who defeated Oscar Dela Hoya in a stunning fight last year drew the attention of Hatton after hearing of the outcome of their bout. He says that Manny is indeed a worthy opponent but that he will be ready and will be surprising the champ. Manny Pacquiao is however in another fight, a fight for his advertising contract where he ended up in hot water. As the young boxer was making his name in the ring, he signed up for an entertainment channel Solar Sports which had a ten or fifteen year lock on all his fights/ matches. His having signed a contract with new broadcasters drew ire from the media outlet as they have sighted the provisions of his contract with them that he himself signed. Just another day in the life of a boxer who might have failed to look before he leapt out of the ring which he so dominates, into the world of corporate wrangling where lawyers and corporate people rule!

Herb Score is the Cleveland Indians pitcher and the team’s former broadcaster who was injured in an accident way back, died in his home at Rocky River, Ohio. He was 75. Score’s career as the team’s pitcher started in 1955 and ended in 1959. He was awarded the American League Rookie of the Year in 1955 for going 16-10. He then went 20 to 9 the following year. He also made the All Star team, twice. But his wonderful career as a pitcher took a bad turn on the 7th of May, 1957. New York Yankees’ Gil MacDougald lined a ball off of Herb’s right eye. It broke his nose and his facial bones. Score was able to see again but he was never the same after that accident. He then became the broadcaster for the Indians from 1963 up to 1997, when he retired.

Referee Rob Styles got into the spotlight again, in another controversial penalty decision that led to a draw between the 10-man Newcastle and Manchester City, held at St James Park on Monday night. Last month, Styles apologised to Bolton for a quite similar decision that eventually led the team’s defeat, 2-0 versus the Manchester United. He showed red to Habib Beye. Many thought as a very aggresive decision. The decision came when Beye tackled Robinho on the edge of the box and seemed to have gotten hold of the ball in a fair situation but Styles called out Beye. Robinho spot kicked past Shay Given leading to a draw. Everyone knows it was not a penalty. And admittedly referees make mistakes too. Obviously, Styles made one.

No one is backing down on the December 6 fight in Las Vegas. Aside from the big revenues of both camps, it is the biggest fight ever and will create media craze all over the world. Oscar de la Hoya has a chance to take revenge for defeat of his fellow Mexican boxers from “the Mexican destroyer,” Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.
The Golden Boy, Oscar De la Hoya, dreams about the fight with Pacquiao every night. The “Dream Match” promoting to historic six city tour with a 39-5, including 30 knockouts, is tipped to climb the ring for the 147-pound fight at about 60 and currently the WBC lightweight champion. This fight will bring together boxing’s most bankable star and arguably its most talented fighter. It is history in the making for both of them.
