Pacman and Pretty Boy in talks already?

The fight between British boxing superstar Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton and Filipino ring icon Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao hasn’t even been settled yet, but already another megabuck fight seems to be in the works for Pacquiao and undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. Nothing is final yet, of course, but long has Pacquiao hinted that he would like to fight the smart mouth Mayweather, especially since he plans to retire after about two or three more profitable fights. Bob Arum of Top Rank though, Pacquiao’s promoter, has even been casually name-dropping Mayweather in some interviews, leading to speculation that there might indeed be a Pacman vs. Pretty Boy fight somewhere in the future. This is especially since Mayweather Jr. hinted that he would again leave his retirement (his megabuck fights against Oscar dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton were also “from retirement”). More details here.

Pacquiao and Hatton Confirm May 2 Bout

pacquiaohattonThe two fighters have confirmed their schedule for their title bout where they are set to fit fist against fists in the boxing ring to see who’s better. Manny Pacquiao who defeated Oscar Dela Hoya in a stunning fight last year drew the attention of Hatton after hearing of the outcome of their bout. He says that Manny is indeed a worthy opponent but that he will be ready and will be surprising the champ. Manny Pacquiao is however in another fight, a fight for his advertising contract where he ended up in hot water. As the young boxer was making his name in the ring, he signed up for an entertainment channel Solar Sports which had a ten or fifteen year lock on all his fights/ matches. His having signed a contract with new broadcasters drew ire from the media outlet as they have sighted the provisions of his contract with them that he himself signed. Just another day in the life of a boxer who might have failed to look before he leapt out of the ring which he so dominates, into the world of corporate wrangling where lawyers and corporate people rule!

He also made the All Star team, twice. But his wonderful career as a pitcher took a bad turn on the 7th of May, 1957. New York Yankees’ Gil MacDougald lined a ball off of Herb’s right eye. It broke his nose and his facial bones. Score was able to see again but he was never the same after that accident. He then became the broadcaster for the Indians from 1963 up to 1997, when he retired.

Referee Styles in the spotlight… again!

Referee Rob Styles got into the spotlight again, in another controversial penalty decision that led to a draw between the 10-man Newcastle and Manchester City, held at St James Park on Monday night. Last month, Styles apologised to Bolton for a quite similar decision that eventually led the team’s defeat, 2-0 versus the Manchester United. He showed red to Habib Beye. Many thought as a very aggresive decision. The decision came when Beye tackled Robinho on the edge of the box and seemed to have gotten hold of the ball in a fair situation but Styles called out Beye. Robinho spot kicked past Shay Given leading to a draw. Everyone knows it was not a penalty. And admittedly referees make mistakes too. Obviously, Styles made one.

A much awaited fight!

England names John Terry as new captain

Installing the new captain on England’s team seems to be a very good call for the Brits. Even former captain David Beckham was impressed, (despite the fact that he had to lose the prestigious position to the new king of his country’s most well obsessed over sports). According to an interview by Fox, Beckham especially likes Terry’s approach to training. He finds it effective with its accurate and serious nature. He also said that Terry knew how to communicate with his team, which is always good because they are able pull off exactly what he needs. England is scheduled for a match against the United States.
